About the Interior Museum

Interior Museum SealThe Department of the Interior Museum is located on the first floor of the Main Interior Building at 1849 C Street NW, Washington, DC. The Museum is accessible from both the C Street and E Street entrances; the E Street entrance is wheelchair accessible.

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Museum educates the public and DOI employees about the current missions and programs of the Department of the Interior, the history of the Department, and the art and architecture of its headquarters building in Washington, DC.

The Department of the Interior Museum is located on the first floor of the Main Interior Building.The DOI Museum acquires objects appropriate for promoting understanding of the Department's activities. We hold these objects in trust and provide access to them for use in supporting the missions of the Department. We document, preserve, and manage our collections in ways that enhance their long-term availability for these purposes.

Our DOI Museum activities are targeted to visitors to the nation's capital. DOI employees, schools, and other groups we reach through partnerships with other institutions and various media. The Interior Museum is open the third Saturday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. with special family programs planned. To make a reservation for the program, please call (202) 208-4659.

The Indian Craft Shop, also located in the Department of the Interior Headquarters Building at 1849 C Street, NW, is also open the third Saturday.

Main Interior Building.Visitors must present some form of photographic identification at the building entrance. The handicapped accessible entrance is at E Street. To enter through the handicapped entrance, please call (202) 208-7814 in advance of your arrival.
