National Security

Preventing a terrorist attack on American soil is the first priority of the Department of Justice, and the Office of Legal Policy (OLP) has played in integral role in the Department's efforts. Since the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, OLP has led efforts to ensure that our law enforcement and intelligence personnel have the tools and authorities they need to do their jobs. OLP played a key role in the passage of critical legislation such as the USA PATRIOT Act, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, and the USA PATRIOT Reauthorization and Improvement Act. In the last year, our office ensured that the new National Security Division would have all legal authorities in place to hit the ground running, and we have continued efforts to make sure that our laws and regulations are adequate to address the ever-evolving national security threats we face. We have also played a key role in developing the new information sharing environment. This Office has played and will continue to play an important role in efforts to update Attorney General Guidelines to reflect our strategy of prevention.
