This week, ONDCP extends its new effort to educate parents about the risks of teen prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse with national ads in newspapers and magazines across the country. This media blitz is part of a new public awareness campaign that launched during the Super Bowl with new television advertising made in collaboration with the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. Though overall teen drug use is down nationwide, more teens abuse prescription drugs than any other illicit drug, except marijuana - more than cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine combined.

As part of this effort, ONDCP's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign has partnered with Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) to create a Strategizer for community groups that includes strategies, case studies, and resources for initiating or enhancing a prescription drug abuse campaign in your community. This new toolkit, "Teen Prescription Drug Abuse: An Emerging Threat," is available and downloadable now at ONDCP's Web site for parents and community groups.

The Prescription Drug Abuse Strategizer outlines approaches for effective programs, including:

  • Engaging local print, radio, and TV media;
  • Recruiting and briefing experts for a community roundtable;
  • Developing resources and materials - including online content, call-in numbers, and print materials;
  • Executing local town hall meetings; and
  • Engaging corporate and community partners - including pharmacists, schools, libraries, PTAs, medical associations, and local businesses.
ONDCP Director John Walters will launch the new "Strategizer 52" at CADCA's Annual Leadership Conference next week in Washington, D.C during his plenary address on Wednesday, February 13.

Additionally, the Media Campaign will host two workshops at CADCA's Conference: 1) a session on preventing teen prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse (Thursday, February 14, 10:45 - 11:45 a.m.) and 2) a workshop on strategies and tactics for designing local anti-methamphetamine campaigns. The meth session will detail ONDCP's "Life After Meth" campaign - an effort focused on personal stories of treatment and recovery (Thursday, February 14, 4:15 - 5:15 p.m.).
