Motorcycle Helmet Use in 2008 -- Overall Results |
Use of DOT-compliant helmets in 2008 stood at 63 percent, a gain from 58 percent in 2007. Other important findings from this research note are that motorcycle helmet use continues to be higher in states that require all motorcyclists to wear helmets and that helmet use has increased on expressways and in urban areas. |

An Analysis of Motorcycle Helmet Use in Fatal Crashes |
This report examined motorcycle rider helmet use in fatal crashes during the period 1997-2006. The following factors were most highly correlated with motorcycle rider helmet use: the existence of a motorcycle helmet law in the State where the crash occurred, the motorcycle rider's age and blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at the time of the crash, the engine size of the motorcycle, and whether the crash occurred at night or during the day. The report used both exploratory data analysis and logistic regression models to relate motorcycle rider helmet use to various crash factors. |

Bodily Injury Locations in Fatally Injured Motorcycle Riders |
This study reveals a significant correlation between helmet use and injures to the head among fatally injured motorcycle riders. The data showed that slightly more than half of the un-helmeted fatally injured motorcyclists had one or more injuries to their head. This compares to slightly more than a third of the helmeted motorcyclists. Thus, fatally injured motorcyclists are 45 percent more likely to have suffered a head injury than unhelmeted riders.

NHTSA Releases 2006 Crash Data Files |
NHTSA has made available on it's website the crash data files for 2006. Included in this release are the 2006 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) file, the final 2005 Fatality Analysis Reporting System file and the 2006 National Automotive Sampling System General Estimates System (NASS GES) File. The FARS files are a census of all motor vehicle crashes that resulted in a fatality within 30 days of the crash. The NASS GES is a nationally representative sample of the police-reported crashes of all severities, including those that result in a death, injury, or property damage. To download these data files, please use the direct links provided at right under More On The Web. |
