SUMMARY |
-
During 1989 to 1998, 312 Native
American children and youth were killed in pedestrian-related motor
vehicle crashes.
-
Among Native American
pedestrian-related deaths, 94% occurred on public roads; however,
54% of 1 to 4 year olds were killed in nontraffic locations, such as
private driveways.
-
During the most recent period,
1997�98, Native American males were 2.9 times as likely as white
males to die from being struck by a motor vehicle. Rates for Native
American females were 2 and 3.6 times greater than rates for black
and white females, respectively.

Two infants died from
pedestrian-related, nontraffic events during the ten year period.
-
From 1989 to 1998, Native American
pedestrian death rates decreased by 56%.

Pedestrian death rates in the
Aberdeen, Tucson, Albuquerque, and Navajo IHS Areas ranged from 5 to
7 times greater than U.S. national rate.
