The Weather History for the Month of June

6/1/1934
Blistering heat begins the month in one of the Dust Bowl summers of the 1930s. The mercury soared to 102 degrees at Grand Rapids and 97 degrees at Lansing. The 102 degree reading at Grand Rapids is tied for the highest June temperature with June 20, 1953.
6/1/1943
A violent tornado inured ten people as it moved from Ingham to Shiawassee County and left a path of destruction 20 miles long. Over 250 farm buildings were damaged or destroyed, including 39 homes and 52 barns. Another tornado hit between Lansing and Bath, causing damage to several farms.
6/1/1998
West Michigan was cleaning up from the tremendous destruction caused by the squall line of the day before. Meanwhile on Lake Michigan, water levels continued to rise and fall several feet at some locations through the day as seiches generated by the extreme winds of the squall line continued more than 24 hours after its passage.
6/2/1910
It was a cold day in June as temperatures in the upper 40s in the afternoon were more typical of late March. The high of 47 at Grand Rapids and Muskegon are the coldest high temperatures on record for any day in June. At Lansing the high was 49 degrees, second only to the 46 degree high on the previous day for being the coldest June day.
6/2/1925
Two people were injured as a tornado moved across central Ionia County. A woman was carried 300 feet and left paralyzed and a man was injured in a barn that collapsed.
6/2/1950
Thunderstorms dropped one to three inches of rain across the region. Nearly an inch of rain fell in one hour in Grand Rapids, flooding streets and basements. Lansing had a storm total of 2.30 inches, which was a record for the day.
6/3/1945
An early June cold spell brought widespread frost and freezing temperatures from June 3rd to the 5th. The temperature bottomed out at 32 degrees at Grand Rapids on the morning of the 4th, a record for the coldest June temperature and the latest freeze.
6/4/1860
Powerful thunderstorms moved across Lake Michigan in the evening. Sailors reported seeing a very large waterspout moving across southern portions of the lake. The storms eventually reached West Michigan, causing damage in the Grand Haven area.
6/4/1925
An early June heat wave began and lasted through the 6th with record highs in the mid and upper 90s.
6/5/1905
Torrential rains soaked much of the region. From four to six inches of rain on June 5th and 6th caused widespread flooding. Both Lansing and Grand rapids set records for daily rainfall in the month of June with 5.47 and 4.22 inches, respectively.
6/5/1930
A tornado moved across southern Clinton County from near Eagle to seven miles north of Lansing. One farm home was torn to splinters and scattered.
6/6/1869
It was the second frosty morning in a row as temperatures dropped to near or below freezing. Lansing recorded a low of 31 degrees, after a low of 27 degrees on the 5th which is the coldest ever recorded there in the month of June.
6/6/1917
A violent tornado struck the town of Springport in Jackson County, killing two people. About 35 homes were destroyed.
6/7/1958
One of the coolest Junes on record saw scattered frost across the region as temperature fell to the mid 30s.
6/8/1933
An early season heat wave peaked as temperatures hit 97 degrees at Grand Rapids and 92 at Lansing.
6/9/1963
Severe thunderstorms caused millions of dollars in damage across the region as winds gusted over 70 mph. There were also reports of funnel clouds and a possible tornado in Belmont where several trailers were destroyed and homes were damaged. A tornado near Dorr heavily damaged a house.
6/9/1966
A large storm system that had produced the F5 Topeka, Kansas tornado the previous day moved into the Great Lakes region and brought severe weather to Lower Michigan with high winds and large hail. A tornado struck Wall Lake, near Delton in Barry County and damaged a boat and cottage.
6/9/1974
Ferris State University in Big Rapids is hit by a tornado. Two people are injured. Several houses and two schools also had damage to roofs and walls.
6/9/2004
Severe thunderstorms produced at least one tornado and some very large hail. Hailstones over 4 inches in diameter fell in Jackson County and tornado briefly touched down near Alma, producing only some tree damage.
6/10/1939
Tornadoes struck across southern Lower Michigan, including one that hit Kalamazoo County from near Schoolcraft to Austin Lake. A farm house lost its second floor and a mattress from the home was found over a mile away.
6/11/1968
Severe thunderstorms produced large hail across the region. Hail of 2.5 inches in diameter fell in Ionia County.
6/11/1972
A late season freeze struck the region with Muskegon dropping to 31 degrees for their coldest June temperature on record. Lansing fell to 32 degrees and Grand Rapids to 33 degrees.
6/12/1996
Extensive flash flooding in and around Mt. Pleasant was the result of 1.82 inches of rainfall in 30 minutes with storm totals exceeding 2 inches. At one point parking lots had water 12 inches deep, several fields and ditches were flooded, and some motor homes and campers were set afloat.
6/12/1998
A tornado touched down in Bedford Township in northwest Calhoun County, doing minor damage to a few homes and shearing off trees like a large weed whacker.
6/13/1900
A tornado touched down near Marshall and passed north of Battle Creek, ending near Bellevue. Barns were destroyed at several farms along the path of the storm.
6/13/1994
A tornado struck Jackson County, producing a 16-mile damage path and injuring 2 people. More than a dozen homes were damaged or destroyed, along with other buildings.
6/13/2004
Severe weather struck across the region and a weak tornado touched down briefly in a field one mile northeast of Stanton in Montcalm County
6/14/1894
A week long heat wave was underway with temperatures at or above 90 degrees across much of the region from June 10th to June 16th. Grand Rapids hit 95 degrees on the 13th, 96 degrees on the 14th and 97 degrees on the 15th.
6/14/1991
A tornado injures one person and damages several homes east of Jackson.
6/15/1960
More than 20 houses sustain damage as a tornado hits the southern part of the city of Jackson, Michigan.
6/15/1976
Tornadoes caused a quarter million dollars damage in Lower Michigan. In Kent County, a barn is destroyed and two houses damaged by a tornado near Cedar Springs. In Allegan and Ottawa Counties, several buildings are damaged along a twelve mile path, ending just south of Jenison. Mobile homes are damaged near Walton in Wexford County.
6/15/1982
A series of strong tornadoes struck central Lower Michigan. In Gratiot County, several homes were damaged, two of them severely as a tornado moved from near Pompeii to North Star.
6/16/1974
Cool and cloudy weather prevailed for the middle of June with high temperatures only in the middle 50s across the region on both June 16th and 17th.
6/17/1975
A tornado struck two miles northeast of Newaygo. A tree fell on and killed a 14 year old girl who was camping with her parents. Tornadoes also hit Roscommon County, where damage was done to some boats on the southwest shore of Houghton Lake. Another tornado damaged several farm buildings north of Zeeland in Ottawa County.
6/18/1976
Three tornadoes cause minor damage across Lower Michigan. The first tornado moved northwest of Lansing, damaging a house and destroying a barn and shed. Another tornado blew down barns near Reese in Saginaw County. The final tornado destroyed a barn and damaged a garage in Gladwin County, north of Edenville.
6/18/1994
An early season heat wave peaked with temperatures in the mid and upper 90s across the region. The temperature hit 98 at Lansing, 96 at Grand Rapids and 91 at Muskegon.
6/19/1954
A tornado strikes in Jackson County at Gillett's Lake, damaging several houses and cars but causing no injuries.
6/19/1995
Muskegon hit 98 degrees, their highest temperature on record in the month of June. Their second hottest June reading of 95 degrees would occur the following day.
6/20/1953
An early summer heat wave peaked with temperatures around 100 degrees. It was the hottest June day on record at Grand Rapids with a high of 102 and a sultry low of 79 degrees.
6/21/1988
The hot summer of 1988 got off to a sizzling start with record highs of 98 degrees at Grand Rapids and Lansing.
6/22/1957
At least four weak tornadoes hit southern Lower Michigan. At Hudsonville in Ottawa County, damage is down to a warehouse. A barn is destroyed near Pinconning in Bay County. Several barns are damaged or destroyed in Berrien and Cass Counties. Trees are taken down at Dumont Lake in Allegan County.
6/22/1992
One of the coldest summers on record in west Michigan got off to a freezing start with frost and freezing temperatures across the region. At Muskegon the temperature plummeted to 32 degrees. It was the latest freezing temperature on record there.
6/23/1870
An extreme heat wave began and lasted through the end of June. Temperatures in the mid and upper 90s prevailed most of that time. Lansing set their all time high for June of 99 degrees on the 25th.
6/23/1960
A tornado struck north of Carson City in Montcalm County, damaging or destroying several farm buildings and four mobile homes.
6/24/1998
A severe thunderstorm produced hail up to 3 inches in diameter and two tornadoes as it tracked across Eaton and Jackson Counties. The first tornado touched down just east of Eaton Rapids and downed trees and power lines. The second tornado hit Layton Corners in north central Jackson County. This tornado did about half a million dollars in damage as it did minor damage to about a dozen homes.
6/25/1870
The monthly record high for June of 99 degrees for Lansing was set on this day. This record would be tied on June 25 in 1895 and again in 1988.
6/25/1969
A tornado begins near Cedar Springs in Kent County and moves east for seven miles, damaging a store and destroying a barn, chicken coop and 14 camper trailers.
6/26/1956
A tornado struck Gratiot County near Perrinton. Two homes and five barns were destroyed and fifty other buildings were damaged. Two people were injured.
6/27/1875
Tornadoes struck Detroit and Jackson during the late afternoon and early evening. The Detroit tornado killed two people and injured 25 others.
6/27/1914
A tornado struck Gratiot County, destroying several buildings as it moved from North Star to three miles north of Edgewood. A barn door was carried nearly a mile.
6/27/1944
A three day heat wave peaked with high temperatures of 97 degrees in Grand Rapids and 93 degrees at Lansing.
6/27/1968
Cool and cloudy weather prevailed with high temperatures only in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
6/28/1959
Hot weather prevailed with a high temperature of 92 degrees at Grand Rapids and Lansing. At Grand Rapids the low temperature was 78 degrees, second only to the 79 degree low on June 20, 1953 for the warmest low temperature on record for the month of June.
6/29/1930
Severe weather struck Lower Michigan. A tornado and downburst event destroyed a church and several barns with an intermittent path of damage from Scottville to Cadillac.
6/29/1943
Very cool summer weather prevailed with a record low temperature of 43 degrees and a record cool high temperature of 61 degrees at Grand Rapids. Another record low of 40 degrees would follow on the morning of the 30th.
6/29/1995
As much as four inches of rain within an hour left streets and basements flooded in the city of East Grand Rapids and in southeast sections of the city of Grand Rapids. Water standing two to three feet deep stranded cars along one street, but most damage was due to flooded basements.
6/29/2005
A weak tornado moved across rural areas of Newaygo County, causing no damage. The tornado was a type known as a landspout. Several photos captured its brief but impressive existence.
