United
States and Republic of Korea Reach Agreement on Rice Imports |
|
USDA Secretary Veneman announced an agreement between the United
States and the Republic of Korea to obtain greater market
access opportunities for U.S. rice exporters. As a result, Korea will double
its imported rice volume during the next 10 years, provide guaranteed access for
50,000 metric tons of U.S. rice each year, and make imported
rice available directly to Korean consumers. (12/30/04) |

USDA Releases Rule
To Establish Minimal-Risk Regions For Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy - Recognizes Canada as Minimal-Risk Region,
Making it Eligible to Export to the United States

The
U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that after conducting
an extensive risk review it is establishing conditions under
which it will allow imports of live cattle under 30 months of
age and certain other commodities from regions with effective
bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) prevention and detection

FDA Issues Final Rule on the Establishment and
Maintenance of Records to Enhance the Security of the U.S. Food
Supply Under the Bioterrorism Act |

This
final regulation implements section 306 of the Bioterrorism Act,
which directs the HHS Secretary to issue regulations requiring
persons who manufacture, process, pack, transport, distribute,
receive, hold, or import food to establish and maintain records.
These records identify the immediate previous source of all food
received, as well as, the immediate subsequent recipient of all

Jamaica Lifts Ban on U.S. Beef Products |

USDA Secretary Veneman notes that
the agreement "marks an important step forward in getting U.S.
beef markets opened." Prior to the ban, U.S. beef and beef
products exports to Jamaica totaled $4.3 million in 2003.
