The Federal Fair Housing Act and amendments prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, disability, use of a service animal, or retaliation. Throughout the State of Washington, discrimination based on marital status is also illegal. In unincorporated King County, it is also illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation or section 8 housing subsidy. (King County's fair housing ordinance does not apply to the cities)

In addition, the King County Housing and Community Development Program with assistance from the King County Office of Civil Rights has prepared an Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice and an action plan based on that analysis. One major action was the preparation of a Fair Housing Tool Kit for use by King County jurisdictions.
