The highest geographic concentration of steel mills is in the Great Lakes region, including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. About three-fourths of U.S. steelmaking capacity and more than half of the industry’s workers are located within these states. The South is the next-largest steel-producing region, and a few mills are sited in the West. The geographic concentration of the industry continues to change, as electric arc furnace facilities may be built wherever electricity and scrap are reasonably priced and there is a local market for a steel product.
