PN Rule

You will need Adobe Reader to view some of the files on this page. See EPA's PDF page to learn more.

The Public Notification Rule (PN), as revised in 2000, requires faster notice in emergencies and fewer notices overall.  The notices provide better communication of potential health risks from drinking water violations and how to avoid such risks.

Water systems are able to better target notices to the seriousness of the risk and make the existing notification process less burdensome for water suppliers and make notices easier for consumers to read.

This page provides information about the PN rule for primacy agencies (the entities that regulated drinking water systems) and drinking water system owners and operators.
