In cooperation with the Regents of the University of California (Agricultural Experiment Station) and United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, NRCS in California has released the Soil Survey of the western part of Fresno County.

 

 


Illinois

cache riverWetland Restoration in Cache River Watershed
Visit the Cache, and you can easily forget that you are actually in Illinois.  The Cache River Basin is located at the junction of four physiographic provinces, an environmental rarity which makes the area a melting pot for flora and fauna.  The watershed’s terrain consists of hills and valleys dotted in several areas with sinkholes and intermittent streams which drain into the Cache River.  The river basin varies from strikingly beautiful bluffs in the north to primordial swamps in the south.

In this September 1937 photo, a Soil Conservation Service range examiner inspects grass-covered range in San Benito County, California, to determine the effect of vegetation in controlling erosion.  The effect of grazing on range cover is studied to estimate the extent that these hills can be used for pasture without accelerating soil loss.


NRCS This Week features a weekly historical photo and caption.  NHQ, districts, States, RC&D councils, and all other NRCS entities are invited to submit a historical photo of activities or individuals who have worked or are working for the agency along with a caption.

Cutting edge water and natural resource models and assessments require high spatial and temporal resolution climate information.  A research team from NRCS, Texas A&M, the Agricultural Research Service, and the PRISM Group are developing and implementing a methodology for the construction of long-range temporal spatial data sets of daily precipitation and temperature (maximum and minimum) for the Conterminous United States (CONUS).
