RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Serves as Lead Scientist for the NP215 (Pasture, Forage, Turf and Rangeland Systems) project entitled “Semiarid Rangeland Ecosystems: The Conservation-Production Interface.”  This multi-disciplinary team of scientists develops and provides private and public land managers the necessary tools for properly managing rangeland ecosystems to address production and conservation goals.  Research is addressing the following objectives: 1) determine the influences of livestock grazing season and intensity, prairie dogs, prescribed burning season and frequency, grazing X fire and grazing X prairie dog interactions, and shifts in stocking rate on native plant community [composition, diversity, structure, production] and livestock responses [gains, behavior] in northern mixed-grass prairie and shortgrass steppe, and 2) determine the impacts of grazing management practices and weather/climate and interactions on soil C and N storage in northern mixed-grass prairie.  Research will ascertain the effects of livestock as ecosystem engineers, alone or in combination with fire and prairie dogs, to influence vegetation heterogeneity and modify states of vegetation and affect resilience within ecological sites of the northern mixed-grass prairie and shortgrass steppe.  Increased understanding of how grazing intensity and weather/climate influence dynamics of soil carbon storage of C and N may assist emerging carbon credit trading programs in evaluating risks associated with carbon sequestration on rangelands.  Research is collaborative with scientists from Colorado State University, the University of Wyoming, Texas A&M University, Oklahoma State University, and the Shortgrass Steppe Long-term Ecological Research project.
