Additional Geographical Resources
The Ordnance Survey Maps of Great Britain
are mid- to late nineteenth-century county maps, with a scale of six
inches to the mile, indicating the location of manor houses, castles,
etc. Indexed by county, these survey maps are available for England,
Wales, and Scotland. There are also thousands of single sheet maps
of Great Britain, that may indicate estates, coats of arms, cities,
and towns. Although there is no published list or catalog of these
sheet maps, readers in the Geography and Map Reading Room at the Library
of Congress may request the help of a map librarian in locating the
desired item.
Historical indexes are also available, such as Cassell's Gazetteer
of Great Britain and Ireland (DA625 .C344 1899), A Topographical
Dictionary of Great Britain and Ireland, 1833 (DA625 .G675), and
a Gazetteer of the British Isles, 9th ed. (DA640 .B23 1963). In
addition, hundreds of historical atlases of Great Britain, the earliest
being the Saxton Atlas from the 1570s, can be examined in the Geography
and Map Reading Room. More recent publications are the Index of
Place Names: Census 1961, England, Wales, 1965 (DA640 .A25) and
the United Kingdom; Official Standard Names Approved by the United
States Board on Geographic Names, 1950 (DA640 .U5). Researchers
in other libraries may seek assistance from a reference librarian.
