October 17, 2008	July 2008 Airline Traffic Data: Seven-Month 2008 System Traffic Down 0.8 Percent from 2007 and Down 2.9 Percent in July The number of scheduled domestic and international passengers on U.S. airlines during the first seven months of 2008 declined by 0.8 percent from the same period in 2007, dropping to 448.5 million, 3.6 million less than a year earlier, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today reported in a release of preliminary data.
October 10, 2008	National Transportation Statistics Updated: Includes Freight Ton-Miles Tabulations through 2006 The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today updated a special tabulation of ton-miles of freight by mode for 2006. BTS estimates for air, truck, rail, water, and pipelines were developed using a more comprehensive approach than was used in prior estimates. The special tabulation shows that freight ton-miles increased 1.4 percent from 2005 to 2006. Ton-miles by rail increased 6.9 percent from 2005 to 2006, the most of any mode.

September 15, 2008	Second-Quarter 2008 System Airline Financial Data: Network Airlines Report Growing Loss Margin The six largest network airlines, as a group, reported an operating loss margin of 6.3 percent in the second quarter of 2008, a reversal from the second quarter of 2007 when the group reported a 9.2 percent profit margin, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation reported today in a release of preliminary data.

The 20-carrier group consists of the largest network, low-cost and regional carriers based on operating revenue.

Peters announced that the Department today issued a final rule to require airlines to report new and more complete data on the time passengers spend on the tarmac.
