Doppler Radar Images

Where is your radar data coming from?  The radar data you are about to see originated from the WSR-88D (i.e. Doppler Weather Radar), also called the Next Generation Radar...or NEXRAD.

NEXRAD was installed as part of the National Weather Service (NWS) Moderization in the 1990s, and is located in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.  This network (shown below) of radars is mostly owned and maintained by the NWS, but the network includes Department of Defense (DOD) and Federal Aviation Adminstration (FAA) radars as well. Our local radar is located in Cayey, P.R. and is maintained by the FAA.

NIDS Vendors

When the radar network was established, it was necessary to rely on commercial partners to distribute enormous amounts of data generated by the radars.  The NWS is currently under contractual agreement with three (3) NEXRAD Information Dissemination Services...or NIDS vendors.  These vendors access all commissioned WSR-88Ds and make radar data available to users.
The NIDS vendors are:

Kavouras Incorporated UNISYS Weather Information Services WSI Corporation
