About the Program

Since FY 1991, the Minority Health Statistics Grants Program has taken important steps in improving the quantity and quality of health data on minority populations. A number of small-scale, population-specific data collection, analytic, and sampling projects have been funded. Concerted efforts were made in providing training and technical assistance through the conduct of workshops and conferences.

The grants program was implemented by following the recommendations made by a panel of experts at the December 1991 Research Agenda Setting Workshop held in Bethesda, Maryland. Since that time, cooperative agreements have been awarded that address each of the 10 recommendations for program implementation. It is now time to evaluate program implementation and devise new strategies to ensure that goals and objectives are consonant with minority health research priorities. The objectives of the grants program are to:

bullet graphicexpand research opportunities through the award of new grant mechanisms;

bullet graphicrefine the research agenda for future solicitations;

bullet graphicbuild public/private partnerships;

bullet graphicexpand technical assistance activities through technology transfer efforts;

bullet graphicfoster innovative methods of developing and delivering training in minority health research; and

bullet graphicexpand methods of dissemination of data developed by research projects.

A research service sponsored by the grants program is the development of two database catalogs containing references to minority health research articles and databases. Both catalogs are available through the World Wide Web on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Biostatistics' home page.
