Virtual Office Tour - Collaboration |
|
One of the main reasons that our NWS office relocated to the FSU campus was to foster collaboration between the academic community at the University and the meteorological staff at the forecast office. To that end, a special area is set aside within the office for use by university faculty and students. This Collaborative Research room (Collab; pictured above) has a window that looks out onto the operations room (at upper right in picture), but students do not need to interrupt forecast operations to get a look at the weather. The room has a workstation that contains the very same operating system and computer programs that the forecasters use everyday to do their jobs. We'll discuss this system in detail at a later tour stop. The students also have access to other computers that allow them to do research.
Once research has been completed, or reached a point where results can be shared, NWS meteorologists or FSU faculty and students can present their findings in our conference room (pictured below). NWS staff also receive teletraining in this room. The room contains an extensive library of meteorological books and journals, only a small portion of which are included in the photo. It's also a good place for a staff meeting.
