Statistics
CDC monitors the progress by states and the nation towards meeting the
Healthy People 2010 objective on community water
fluoridation—that 75 percent of people on public water systems will
receive water that has the optimal level of fluoride recommended for
preventing tooth decay.

- Table showing state water
fluoridation status for 2002, available by state rank and alphabetically by
state.
- Table of the status of water
fluoridation, 2002. Provides information on the percentage of the
total U.S. population that was receiving optimally fluoridated water
from public drinking water systems as of December 31, 2002.
- Table of the status of water
fluoridation, 2000. Provides information on the percentage of the
total U.S. population that was receiving optimally fluoridated water
from public drinking water systems, as of December 31, 2000.
- Table of the status of water
fluoridation, 1992. This fact sheet provides information on the
percentage of the total U.S. population that was receiving optimally
fluoridated water from public drinking water systems, as of December
31, 1992.

fluoridation status, 1940–2002.
National Oral Health
Surveillance System (NOHSS)
NOHSS provides statistics for each state and the nation on the
percentage of people who receive optimally fluoridated water from public water systems. Statistics on water fluoridation
are available for 1992, 2000, and 2002. This information is available in
tables, graphs, and maps.
Synopses of State and Territorial Dental Public Health Programs
(Synopses)
The Synopses provides the percentage by state of people who receive fluoridated water
from public water systems, which can be viewed
either as a table or a map. Data represented in the current year may not
be from that year; please refer to the footnotes for the timeframe of
that data.
My Water's
Fluoride (MWF)
MWF allows consumers in participating states to learn basic information
about their water system, including the number of people served by the
system and the target fluoridation level. Information for MWF is
provided on a voluntary basis by states that participate in the
Water Fluoridation
Reporting System (WFRS). More than 32 states currently and two tribal organizations
currently participate.
Water
Fluoridation Reporting System (WFRS)
The CDC tracks the populations served by fluoridated water systems
using the water system information in WFRS.
Oral Health Maps
This geographic information system generates maps of water fluoridation
status by state or county for participating states. State and county
profiles with additional water fluoridation information complement the
maps. Oral Health Maps draws fluoridation data from WFRS, a Web-based
monitoring tool for state and tribal oral health and water fluoridation
managers.
Calculating
Fluoridated Populations
A state’s fluoridation status is an indicator of progress in promoting oral
health; consequently, it is important to document how this status is
calculated.
