GOVERNOR SIGNS LEGISLATION TO PROTECT SENIORS, HONORS VOLUNTEERS

May 24 - "While older citizens are celebrated across the country, I don't think there is anywhere in the world where they are more revered than in the State of Hawai`i," Governor Lingle said at a ceremony to recognize outstanding senior citizens who help others in the community through active volunteerism.

During the ceremony, the Governor also signed two bills to expand protection and increase penalties for those who commit crimes against Hawai`i's elderly population.  "Defrauding our seniors is particularly deplorable since they are more vulnerable than others, as many are retired and living off their life savings," Governor Lingle said.

SB 1400 requires financial institutions in Hawai`i to report any suspected financial abuse against a senior citizen to the Department of Human Services or a local law enforcement agency.  HB 1306 allows an extra $50,000 fine per violation to be added for securities violations against a person 62 years or older.  Earlier this month, the Governor signed HB 1336, which imposes fines of up to $10,000 for each violation by mortgage brokers and solicitors committed against seniors.
