GOVERNOR, ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS COMMEMORATE ESTABLISHMENT OF HAWAI`I EXPERIMENTAL TROPICAL RAINFOREST

May 24 - "The Hawai`i Experimental Tropical Forest exemplifies what happens when we focus on the needs of states, respect the unique knowledge of local authorities and welcome the help of private groups and volunteers," Undersecretary of Agriculture Mark Rey said at a news conference with Governor Lingle and officials from the Department of Land and Natural Resources to commemorate the establishment of the site.

Governor Lingle emphasized the significance of the Hawai`i experimental tropical rainforest and the importance of federal, state and local partnerships in developing an increased understanding of conservation issues.

She also addressed the long-term benefits in science and education that will result from research conducted at the 50,000-acre site on the Big Island, which includes wet and dry tropical rainforests and is home to numerous endangered plant and animal species
