CDC Responds to Hurricane Ike

(September 17) CDC is working with public and private partners including state and local governments, other federal agencies, community-based organizations and businesses to assist affected areas that are being impacted by Hurricane Ike. CDC representatives are also responding to requests for public health consultation on issues requiring subject-matter expertise.

For example, the hotel industry is providing evacuees from affected areas with CDC's health protection messages on returning home safely, cleaning up after a hurricane and reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Specifically, CDC has partnered with the Global Hyatt Corporation in distributing hurricane recovery information to Hyatt Regency hotels in Houston, Los Pines, San Antonio, Hill Country, Austin, Dallas and Dallas-Fort Worth and to Grand Hyatt hotels in San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth.

In addition to partnering with businesses, CDC has deployed staff and resources in response to Hurricane Ike and the subsequent flooding the storm has caused. CDC has deployed medical doctors, key management officials and environmental health officials to Texas and Louisiana to work directly with state and local responders to address critical health threats in the region.

Currently, there are several illnesses and one confirmed death from carbon monoxide poisoning in Texas and Louisiana, and many people are concerned about snakebites. In addition, recovering from a hurricane can be very difficult, both physically and mentally. During this time, it is normal for evacuees and affected people to experience high levels of stress.
