Waste-To-Energy Team:

The mission of the Region 6 Waste-To-Energy (WTE) team is to promote the use of renewable energy under the Resource Conservation Challenge in three target areas: Landfills, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs). Our efforts are to prevent or reduce the emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas, through partnerships with other federal agencies, states, tribes, businesses and communities by fostering the development of economically sustainable energy recovery projects.

Goals of the Region 6 WTE Team

Serve as a liaison for stakeholders
Filtering new technologies
Establish partnerships for pilot projects
Promote renewable energy as a fuel source
Work with states on establishing WTE as a priority and on regulations and incentives
Partner with stakeholders to establish Pilot Projects and MOU/MOA agreements
Influence Future Design of facilities

Project Goals:

Capture largely untapped methane resources in landfills, CAFO's and POTW's for use as fuel
Reduce methane emissions to the atmosphere
Promote indigenous enterprises to build and operate recovery systems and use the energy
Improve the health of urban dwellers by reducing land, air and water pollution

Additional Information:

U.S. EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) is a voluntary assistance and partnership program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable energy source.
