The new Region 8 Headquarters,
which is leased by EPA, features numerous environmentally friendly designs and
systems. The Solicitation for Offers for the new facility included environmental
provisions developed by the General Services Administration and EPA to ensure
that the building promotes energy and water efficiency and uses environmentally
preferable materials and design.
The new space meets the
LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design)
Gold certification requirement for new construction -- making it one of only
a few buildings in Colorado to achieve such a high performance and sustainability
rating. Building features include:
Energy Conservation
The new lease requires
that the building must meet ENERGY STAR®
building energy performance standards. EPA will also purchase green
power for the building.
A two-story lobby and full-height,
nine story atrium increases day lighting and reduces light energy loads. The
building's "double-L" shape will feature different window and material designs
for sunward and windward-facing sections of the building, each designed to cut
energy usage.
Additional commissioning
and above-standard building mechanical system controls and monitoring capabilities
optimize mechanical system performance and minimize energy use at the building.
Photovoltaic panels are
used to provide supplemental electricity; wind power purchases provide the remaining
electricity used in the building.
Water Conservation and
Quality
The building is saving
water through the use of low-flow plumbing fixtures such as waterless urinals
and dual-flush toilets.
A
vegetated green roof covers much of the building roof area. By incorporating
vegetation, green roofs help reduce stormwater runoff, filter pollutants from
stormwater, and contribute to overall sustainability by reducing building energy
needs and minimizing urban heat island effects.
Indoor Air Quality
Indoor Air Quality is protected
by the use of low volatile organic compound (low-VOC) interior adhesives, paints,
sealants, and caulks, environmentally preferable janitorial and cleaning products,
and integrated pest management practices.
An under-floor air distribution
system minimizes energy consumption while improving indoor air quality.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Construction materials
include the use of recycled materials and environmentally certified wood products.
Furniture is made of low-VOC emitting materials with recycled content in fabrics
and recycled glass content in bathroom vanities.
The new building was designed
and built to be consistent with EPA's Headquarters recycling program.
The developer committed
to recycling 75 percent or more of the waste generated during the construction
period.
Alternative Transportation
Extensive bike parking
and shower facilities are available in the building.
The building's location
near Denver's Union Station offers access to multiple public transportation
options.
