KCACC accomplishments 2008

Cleaning and sanitation
  •  Implemented UC Davis recommendations for new cleaning protocols and revised to include even more restrictive protocols for unique medical situations
  • Installed grates in all dog kennels - keeps animals out of drainage trough
  • Replaced dumpsters, cleaned out excess furniture, equipment and cut underbrush in order to control potential for infestations
  • Added storage containers to site to enable better storage, control and organization of supplies
  • Dogs (in adoptions) taken out by volunteers daily – speeds up cleaning process, exercises dogs and increases socialization opportunities
  • Documented spot cleaning begun of dog runs and cat cages throughout the day

Animal comfort
  •  Installed 100 new, stainless steel cat cages (bigger and easier to clean) – UC Davis recommended
  • New and larger cages has shown a reduction in illness
  • Implemented use of bedding in all cat cages, adding perches or boxes
  •  Kuranda dog beds purchased and used (in adoptions)
  • Expanded volunteer program to include dog walkers at both shelter sites
  • Increased the cat cuddling volunteer program and repurposed spaces for this activity
  • Repurposed many areas of the facility to increase available housing for cats
  • Plans for expanded temporary housing for cats is underway
  • Instituted a new feeding program – providing high protein food on a consistent basis (Hills Science Diet)

Medical
  •  Expanded veterinary coverage at Kent Shelter to 6 days per week
  •  Inoculate all animals upon entry to KCACC facilities
  •  Increased euthanasia accountability and documentation for euthanasia decisions. Second review by a supervisor is required and detailed files are kept on every animal euthanized.
  • Started a program with PIMA Medical Institute for training of medical assistants supervised by veterinary instructors
  •  Increasing PIMA program--bringing more equipment and personnel on site to assist medical services to animals
  •  Improved Medical Isolation for cats (including installation of negative air system)
  • Blood tests performed on all animals prior to placement in adoptions or foster
  • Hired several new Animal Control Officers who are also Licensed Vet Techs to assist with the daily review of animal heath and identification of those animals that require our staff veterinarian to examine
  • Reduced euthanasia rate to 20% (per Council mandate) while corresponding dramatic increase in the shelter population
  • With the upcoming temporary housing facilities for cats the ability to achieve greater separation between stray and adoptions/foster populations will help to control spread of illness

Animal identification and tracking
  • Improved Chameleon system use (computer program for animal tracking and log)
  • Taking pictures of animals enable more electronic searching (by the public) for lost pets and to advertise adoptable animals. Process is improving each day and now includes animals going into foster
  •  Implemented new cage numbering systems, animal identification procedures to assist with tracking of all animals within facility and being transferred for medical, foster and offsite adoption events. This process is still underway and improving each day.
  •  Implementing new trainings for staff to maximize use of the system

Public/Outreach programs
  • Expanded hours and days the Kent shelter is open to the public
  • Funded Positions for outreach to develop more options for placement of animals
  • Added Volunteer Program Manager to increase organization, size and types of volunteer assistance
  • Partner with Northwest Center which provides additional volunteer support
  •  Expanded Foster home program significantly to about 140 homes that care for 400+ young, sick or special needs animals while attempting to find more permanent home
  • Hired Communications Specialist to work with the media to increase adoptions and general awareness about KCACC

o Planning pet care segments with KCTV
o Planning adoption features w/Comcast cable
o Organized successful Adopt-a-thon event (June)
  • Working with more organizations to place feral and working barn cats
  •  Added Off-site Placement Coordinator to develop and manage offsite adoption events and locations
  •  Approximately 600 animals adopted from offsite locations
  • Animal placement rates are at all-time highs. In the first half of 2008, the placement rate is 48.5%. In 2007, the animal placement rate was 42.9% and in 2006 40.2%.
  • Participated in “Spay Day USA” promotion (February) for the first time since the 1990s

Animal cruelty investigations
  • Revamped the animal cruelty investigations program, resulting in a record number of cases forwarded to prosecutors (14 cases forwarded in 2007, for first half of 2008, 8 cases have been forwarded)
  • One Animal Control Sergeant assigned to animal cruelty cases full-time
