The Orange County Public Schools HIV/AIDS Prevention Program aims to increase the number of youth in grades 6–12 who understand the consequences of sexual activity and how to prevent HIV infection, and to provide leadership to schools, parents, and the community to strengthen the prevention of HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy among youth.

Orange County's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing professional development for teachers and school staff on exemplary HIV curricula, established district HIV policies, and human sexuality education guidelines.

  • Assessing the quality of classroom instruction in HIV prevention received by students in grades 6–12, as well as teacher satisfaction and knowledge regarding policies, programs, resources, professional development, and technical assistance related to HIV prevention.

  • Collaborating with community-based organizations to implement HIV prevention programs for African American, Latino, and sexual minority youth.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Orange County students in grades 9–12.

  • Creating a variety of materials, including a report, slide presentation, pamphlets, flyers, and posters, to present a comparison of YRBS data for Orange County over time.

  • Collaborating with the Orange County Health Department to distribute YRBS materials to community agencies and district personnel, including the superintendent.
