Healthy AdolescentsFlorida receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Florida HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Program is to strengthen the capacity of schools to provide effective HIV/AIDS prevention education to students.

Florida's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Collaborating with the Florida School Association to plan and coordinate an HIV prevention education track at the annual Florida School Health Conference.

  • Providing professional development and technical assistance for members of the HIV/AIDS prevention education training cadre to prepare them to train parents, school district staff, and local health department staff on a variety of HIV prevention topics.

  • Conducting a regional Promoting HIV/STD and Pregnancy Prevention Together workshop for teachers, school psychologists, staff from the local health department and department of juvenile justice, parents, and youth.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data that are representative of Florida students in grades 9−12, through a collaborative effort between Florida’s Department of Education and Department of Health.

  • Distributing information collected from the YRBS to statewide agencies, members of the statewide school health consortium, district staff, and community-based organizations.

  • Developing a comprehensive YRBS data report and numerous behavior-specific fact sheets to summarize YRBS results.
