Activities - Photo of medicationThe National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities has been actively engaged in activities related to medication exposures during pregnancy since the 1970’s. Most recent activities include:

Advisory Activities

  • Advise on pharmaceutical industry-based pregnancy registries for anti-retroviral, anti-epileptic, migraine, and smoking cessation drugs.

  • Serve on Food and Drug Administration Advisory Committees related to Accutane® (2000, 2004) and pregnancy labeling (1999).

  • Participate in National Children’s Study Working Group on Medicines/Pharmaceuticals.

  • Funded the Organization of Teratology Information Services to collect information about risk communication and the occurrence of isotretinoin (Accutane® ) exposures during pregnancy.

  • Planned, with other participating centers, the analysis of data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study on the effects of medication use during pregnancy.
     

Workshops and Seminars

  • Medication Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: A CDC-wide seminar (December, 2004).

  • Pregnancy Exposure Registries: Evaluating the Teratogenic Potential of Pharmaceutical Products used at Clinical Doses, Drug Information Association (May, 2004).

  • Use of Herbal Products in Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Childhood, National Children’s Study (2003).

  • Concepts and Strategies To Actively Monitor the Risks of Medications in Pregnancy (2000). Sponsored by CDC and other public and private partners. [Click here to view a PDF of the workshop summary]
