Bishop, CA (June 25, 2008)... The Inyo National Forest, White Mountain Ranger District, is soliciting comments for a proposed forest system trail reconstruction project in the vicinity of Mono Pass.  The reconstruction work would occur on a segment of the Ruby Lake Trail 300 feet in length, and three segments of the Mono Pass Trail with a total length of 450 feet.  Proposed trail work would begin during August 2008.

Project activities would include: re-routing approximately 300 feet of the Ruby Lake Trail out of Ruby Lake Meadow to an alignment on sandy upland soils; reducing the width of the Mono Pass Trail through Ruby Lake Meadow; constructing a retaining wall and trail drainage structures on the Mono Pass Trail.

The project would take place in the upper elevations of the Rock Creek watershed within the John Muir Wilderness.  The purpose of re-routing the Ruby Lake Trail is to promote the restoration of Ruby Lake Meadow to natural conditions.  The purpose of reconstructing the Mono Pass Trail is to protect alpine meadows adjacent to the trail from erosion.

Written, facsimile, hand-delivered, oral, or electronic comments concerning this action would be most helpful if received by July 28, 2008.    Please submit comments to:
