Garbage Fees

Current Garbage Fee

The fee for garbage disposal is $102.05 per ton, which includes a Washington State refuse tax of 3.6 percent and a $3.50-per-ton moderate risk waste surcharge. See the Disposal Fees page for more detailed information.

Minimum Garbage Fee

The minimum garbage fee is $17.25 per entry for all vehicles. Passenger cars pay only the minimum. All other vehicles, including station wagons, vans, mini-vans, pickup trucks, recreational vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and sport utility vehicles, will be weighed in and out and charged for the actual weight disposed, pro-rated, based on the tonnage rate. The entry fee covers the first 320 pounds.

Methods of Payment

Cash, checks, Visa® or MasterCard® (debit/credit) are accepted.

Unsecured Load Fees

A secured load is a load of material that has been tied, tarped, secured or covered in the vehicle in a manner that will prevent any material from leaving the vehicle while the vehicle is in motion. Any vehicles arriving at any public or private transfer station or landfill in King County with unsecured loads can be charged an unsecured load fee. The unsecured load fees are:

  • $3.00 for passenger licensed vehicles
  • $5.00 for trucks less than or equal to 8,000 pounds licensed gross vehicle weight
  • $10.00 for trucks greater than 8,000 pounds licensed gross vehicle weight.

These fees are in addition to any penalties or fines for unsecured loads by law enforcement officers. If a law enforcement officer stops you, the fine for transporting an unsecured load is $216. If an item falls out of or off your vehicle and causes bodily injury, you will be charged with a gross misdemeanor, which carries a penalty up to $5,000 and may include jail time.

Restrictions

Vehicle and vehicle/trailer size: Maximum combined length of 30 feet, except Bow Lake, Enumclaw and Shoreline, where a combined length of 45 feet can be accommodated. Call 206 296-6542 for further information when lengths exceed the maximum.

Item size: No items with lengths greater than 8 feet; no heavy objects with dimensions over 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and more than 200 pounds.

Restricted Items:

Construction Debris: Construction, demolition and landclearing (CDL) debris includes wood, roofing, sheetrock, concrete, brick, masonry, rocks, large stumps, brush and trees. Customers using dump bed vehicles may not dispose of CDL at SWD transfer stations. Small amounts of CDL (less than 10 percent by volume) that are part of a large load of garbage will be accepted.

Electronic Equipment:
(Note: the following items are not accepted. However, some electronic equipment is accepted for recycling at Shoreline – see below under "Recycling Services" for more information.)

  • computers
  • monitors
  • laptops

Hazardous Waste - not accepted (except at Factoria, Tues-Sun, 9am - 5pm)

Liquids - not accepted

Mercury-containing Products not accepted:

  • Mercury switches
  • Thermometers
  • Thermostats

Passenger tires - limit four per visit.

Unacceptable Wastes: Some types of waste are prohibited from disposal due to regulatory constraints or environmental or public health concerns or because the waste can readily be recycled or disposed more appropriately at a different type of facility. Other wastes are accepted at King County facilities only when certain conditions are met during or prior to disposal. These include asbestos containing waste, biomedical waste, industrial waste, contaminated soils, empty tanks and drums, oversized materials, and large quantities of food or beverages that must be destroyed. The waste clearance page includes instructions for determining if your waste requires a waste clearance decision.

Water Use: Water conservation measures are in effect. All non-essential water use is prohibited. The general public may not use water to hose out their vehicles or to rinse garbage cans - use brooms instead. Some commercial garbage company drivers may rinse out their vehicles for health, safety or cleanliness reasons - only with authorization of transfer station staff on duty.

Recycling Services

Recycling bins are located at all transfer stations except Algona and Factoria. Note: transfer station recycling bins have limited capacity. Excess materials cannot be stored outside of bins. Call the Solid Waste Information Line: 206-296-4466 for assistance with unusually large quantities.
