Special NIH Review Session on Electronic Proposal Submissions

On Wednesday, January 11, administrators and several faculty gathered to view a special "Web Cast" on the preparation and submission of NIH grant proposals using Grants.Gov. The 3.5 hour broadcast was recorded and has been archived on the NIH web site for individual viewing.  To access click here.

For several months we have been reporting on - and attempting to resolve - a range of problems associated with implementation of Grants.gov.  These problems are not unique to BNL; they affect every grant-seeking institution in the country, but especially those investigators who use Mac computers of other than Microsoft's Internet Explorer.  NIH appears to have acknowledged the severity of this problem with a statement released on February 7, 2006 postponing implementation of Grants.gov for unsolicited R01 grant applications - what is by far the agency's most popular grant mechanism.  Implementation for R01s is now postponed until February 2007.  For further information, you may wish to review recent announcements from NIH (links provided below).

eRA-Commons

eRA-Commons is NIH's foray into the world of electronic research administration.  If you intend to submit a grant proposal to the NIH, it is incumbent upon you to register in the eRA-Commons database.  Please note:  NIH grant applicants must register both as Grants.Gov users and as eRA-Commons users.  The use of both sites will be required in the preparation and submission of NIH grant proposals.  For information on how to register as a BNL user of eRA Commons, click here.  To access the eRA-Commons site, click here.

PHS398: Grant Application Instructions and Forms

PHS398 is the designation or form number assigned to the traditional NIH grant application package which, of course, is being phased out in favor of electronic proposal submission using Grants.Gov.  Nonetheless, select grant competitions will continue to use the PHS398 over the next year; for this reason we provide you this link to access the complete instructions and array of forms.  Several partially-completed PHS398 forms follow:
