Message from the Director

Welcome to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) website. Our website was created with family members, victims and victim survivors, employees, media, and students in mind.  The information provided on our Web pages gives an overview and a glimpse into who we are as a state agency.

Currently we are faced with numerous challenges as our inmate population continues to climb, reaching new records almost weekly.  As of November 3, 2008, we have over 51,200 inmates housed in the 32 prisons here in Ohio.  There are some 37,000 offenders living in our communities who are under some form of supervision with our agency.

Our department takes great pride in the fact that "rehabilitation" is part of our name.  Part of the mission of this agency is to provide opportunities for offenders to have educational, vocational and social programming which will enable them to become "successful returning citizens" to the neighborhoods where we live.  This agency needs the support and partnerships from community grassroots organizations, the faith community, educational and social agencies, local law enforcement, family members and other criminal justice partners to help create an atmosphere of change and successful reentry.  Please look at our Volunteer link or call 1-877-728-1534 to see how you can help an offender with his or her transition from incarceration to returning citizen status.

The dedicated and committed corrections professionals who show up day in and day out to work with the offenders under our care all lead by example and they are the reason DRC is a national leader in the field of corrections.  Our mantra of “I LEAD”, Integrity, Leadership, Excellence, Accountability and Diversity are the core values that we embrace here at DRC. “I LEAD” lets everyone know that we believe in our mission, and we take great pride in the opportunities we have to make a difference in the lives of those under our supervision.

Thank you for visiting the DRC website, and please consider becoming a volunteer to help assist persons who are trying to restore their life and the lives of their loved ones.

Respectfully,
Terry J. Collins
Director

Our Mission

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction protects and supports Ohioans by ensuring that adult felony offenders are effectively supervised in environments that are safe, humane, and appropriately secure. In partnership with communities, we will promote citizen safety and victim reparation. Through rehabilitative and restorative programming, we seek to instill in offenders an improved sense of responsibility and the capacity to become law-abiding members of society.
