Oregon schools and state government spend more than
$78 million a year on energy. These costs can be controlled. Public agencies that take advantage of energy-saving opportunities cut energy costs 10 to 20 percent. If more schools and state agencies took similar actions, we could save about $16 million each year.
The Oregon Department of Energy provides technical help to schools and state and local government to cut energy use and save tax dollars. Among other things, our help includes energy audits, assessments and design reviews.
Building Commissioning
We can help governments and schools ensure that the complex equipment providing lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation and other amenities in their buildings works together effectively and efficiently. Studies on commissioning show that the process provides average energy savings of 15 to 30 percent.
Energy Loan Program
We offer low-interest, long-term loans for governments, schools and others that invest in energy conservation, produce energy from renewable resources, and use recycled materials to create products.

State Energy-Efficient Design (SEED) Program
We can assist you with cost-effective energy conservation measures when building or renovating state buildings.
Resource Conservation Management
We can help train your staff to be resource conservation managers who cut energy use and free up tax dollars for other needs.
Performance Contracting
An energy savings performance contract is an agreement between an energy services company and a building owner. Virtually any project that saves energy or produces energy can use an energy savings performance contract.
Telework
Did you know that you might be able to increase your office´s productivity by allowing some employees to away from the office at remote locations?
State agencies have to consider the option. It is Oregon´s policy to encourage telework in state agencies whenever feasible, and all state agencies must adopt a telework policy. But telework makes good sense for government offices at all levels. Telework programs boost productivity and reduce office and real estate costs. And because employees value the flexibility telework gives them to balance their work and home life, telework programs help employers keep valued staff and recruit qualified personnel.
