What is the difference between a watch and a warning? Severe Storm Watch A severe thunderstorm watch tells you when and where severe thunderstorms are most likely to occur. Severe Storm Warning A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when severe weather has been reported or is imminent. Tornado Watch A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possible in the area. Remain alert for approaching storms. Tornado Warning A tornado warning means that tornadoes have been spotted in the area or indicated by weather radar.
