Screening Research
CDC is funding intervention research designed to test strategies that may increase colorectal cancer screening:
- Morehouse School of Medicine is researching community-based strategies for increasing the use of colorectal cancer screening among African Americans in five metropolitan counties in Georgia.
- West Virginia University is working to increase colorectal cancer screening through a community-based intervention that focuses on members of rural Appalachian churches.
- The University of Massachusetts Medical School and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute are conducting systems research to improve use of colorectal cancer screening in primary healthcare systems.
- CDC substantially contributed to the establishment of a new Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) for colorectal cancer screening quality measure, which is expected to lead to the increased use of recommended screening tests among millions of Americans.
- CDC worked collaboratively with investigators from the National Cancer Institute, state central cancer registries and the American Cancer Society to develop a colorectal cancer monograph (covering 90 percent of the U.S. population) to highlight the magnitude of the burden of colorectal cancer at the national level and to guide cancer control and prevention activities.
