Northwest Wisconsin Community Health Care Planning
Project
Bayfield County and Ashland County appear to offer
plenty of health care options. Yet, Bayfield County is
among the 200 neediest counties in America when it comes
to medical services for uninsured people of low income.
Ashland County is the lowest in Wisconsin when it comes
to dental care for people of limited means.
Working with a grant provided by the Otto Bremer
Foundation, Northwest Wisconsin CEP is spearheading an
effort to solve these problems. Before the end of 2007
the Northwest Wisconsin Community Health Care Project
will seek input on this problem from the citizens of
Ashland and Bayfield Counties, and construct a plan to
meet community needs based on this assessment.
We will hold a series of public meetings in Iron River,
Washburn and Ashland in mid-April offering the
opportunity to anyone who would like to express their
need for medical services.
Federally-funded community clinics already exist in
Superior and Hayward. Following these models, NW
Wisconsin CEP and Rayven Technical Services plan to open
a clinic of similar nature by early 2008. This proposed
project will not only provide low-income families with
access to much needed health care services, it also has
the potential to create a number of well paid jobs in
the community.
