Recreational Activities - Fishing

Fishing Restrictions

[Image]: Golden TroutAlthough trout are not native to most lakes and streams of the eastern Sierra, fishing continues to be an increasingly popular activity. Several trout species have made their way into almost all waterways of the Sierra, often times displacing the native golden trout, California's brightly colored state fish. In an effort to replenish this native population, certain restrictions apply to fishing in the John Muir Wilderness.

COTTONWOOD LAKES IN THE SOUTHERN JOHN MUIR WILDERNESS:
  • Fishing season is from July 1 to October 31
  • Artificial lures and flies with barbless hooks only!
  • Catch and release only in Cottonwood Lakes 1, 2, 3, and 4
  • All other lakes in the Cottonwood Lakes basin - limit 5

Fish from these restricted areas supply the sole source of golden trout eggs for the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery (located in Independence), from which trout are distributed throughout the Sierra.

Licenses are available at many stores and resorts near departure trailheads, but it is advisable to obtain one and a copy of fishing restrictions ahead of time. For more information, please contact the Department of Fish & Game.
