Who can use ILL?

Interlibrary Loan attempts to fill gaps in the UK Libraries collection. If the collection lacks items needed for research,

  • University of Kentucky faculty
  • emeritus faculty
  • students
  • staff

may be able to obtain the books or photocopies of the articles needed for their research. The ILL staff will attempt to obtain the material from another library or document vendor.

The interlibrary loan policies of the William T. Young Library are based on the Interlibrary Loan code of the American Library Association, copyright law and regulations of individual lending libraries.

Procedures

Patrons may submit requests through Interlibrary Loan's ILLiad service. ILLiad is a web-based ILL service that allows patrons to register and store their personal information once then choose a form indicating the type of material they need to request through ILL. Electronic forms are also available on many of the OCLC FirstSearch databases. A separate form is required for each item. Accurate and complete patron and bibliographic information are essential for processing requests. Users must be sure that the UK Libraries do not have the item requested. All patrons using the service agree to honor Interlibrary Loan policies and copyright compliance.

Items may be picked up throughout the day at the Interlibrary Loan service window or after hours at the Young Library Circulation Desk. Items may be returned using the book drop to the left of the Interlibrary Loan service window. Photocopies may be mailed to a campus address or when received electronically made available to the patron in PDF format via the ILLiad service.

Most items are obtained within two weeks. Some arrive much more quickly while some take much longer to receive. Articles being faxed or sent via the Internet may come within seven days, while International requests make take up to three months to fill.

Loans are usually for two weeks with an option of one renewal of a further two weeks. For a renewal, advance notice is necessary. Renewals may be made through ILLiad or by phone; however, the lending institution may not routinely grant the request.

What Cannot Be Borrowed

Pre-1800 imprints, rare items (except in microform), some audio-visual materials, genealogical materials, and some Ph.D. dissertations. Requests for textbook, leisure or recreational reading cannot be obtained through UK's ILL office. Please consult your local public library to acquire leisure and recreational reading. Books within the system which are available, however restricted, may not be requested, but lost items or journals at the bindery may be. For theses and dissertations, a UMI order form with which patrons may purchase a personal copy is available online or at the Young ILL and Reference & Information Services Desks, when these items are otherwise unavailable. Sometimes requested theses are purchased for the library.

Costs

The university absorbs up to $30 per ILL transaction for faculty, students, and staff.
