Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) publications orient searchers to sustainable agriculture topics, provide research guidance and optimize information retrieval. Our print and online resources describe specific topics; identify relevant books, articles, papers, and electronic sources; list subject experts or organizational contacts; suggest reading materials and Web sites; and offer database and Internet search tips. As sustainable agriculture, farming alternatives, information access and technology have evolved, so have AFSIC products.

Bibliographies and Reference Briefs. Staff members create publications that focus on specific topics of current interest. Some publications are bibliographic in nature, and reflect materials contained in the National Agricultural Library collection and/or indexed in NAL's database, AGRICOLA. Special Reference Briefs (SRBs) and subject-focused Web pages provide a broader picture of a topic, including descriptive text and organizational resources, as well as suggested reading lists and selected Web sites.

Other AFSIC Information Products.
"Find It" guides provide orientation and resources regarding specific topics, pointing to Web sites, print publications, pertinent journals and databases, as well as AFSIC publications.
Our directories of organizations and programs include the annually updated Educational and Training Opportunities in Sustainable Agriculture.
Organic Roots is AFSIC's database of full-text, historic USDA research bulletins published before 1942. The bulletins are searchable, and may be viewed and downloaded as full-text images. More full-text digitized documents and databases are planned.
Automated online searches of multiple databases and search engines enable users to find the latest information using search terms and strategies developed by information professionals.
