The National Weather
Service presented a 50 year length of service award to Mrs. Alta F. Garner on June 29,
1998. The award was presented by Benny Terry, Data Acquisition Program Manager (DAPM) and
Jimmy Russell, Hydrometeorological Technician, from the National Weather Service Forecast
Office (NWSFO) in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

This award is presented to those volunteer observers who have completed 50 years of
service to the National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Program. These volunteers
collect weather data on a daily basis and submit their reports to the National Weather
Service. The data is compiled as part of the national climatic database and is published
by the National Climatic Data Center for use by the general public.
Mrs. Garner began taking observations for the community of Amity in June of 1948. However,
her observations benefited many more people than just those in Amity! The daily rainfall
she has recorded has helped support the climatology and forecast verification of the Amity
area and the rest of the nation. Mrs. Garners data is also used to support river
forecasting, as well as the agricultural, construction and recreational interests of the
area.
The dedication of recording weather observations day after day for 50 years speaks enough
for itself, but Mrs. Garner accomplished this important task while raising 8 boys!
We salute Mrs. Garner for all her wonderful contributions to her community, state, and
country! And we look forward to many more years of her observations!
