Concession Management
Overview
Efforts to achieve sustainable forest management will be impacted by many factors, including significant changes in the administration and management of forest concessions. Forest concessions are a system of awarding harvesting rights to individuals, private companies and/or communities who assume the risk and responsibility of forest resources exploitation and/or management.
Although concessions can be a regular and successful process for sustainable management and production of forests, they must be carefully formulated in order to promote strong management. . Inadequate concession systems can suffer from illegal logging; inadequate monitoring and inventory capacities; government lack of capacity to manage concessions; inefficient forest products markets; social and political issues; and issues of profitability and sustainability Forest concessions, therefore, must be designed with specific attention to the details of the realities in each country as well as the consideration of whether concession management is the appropriate approach to be used. |
