Opportunities - Intern Program
One of the most exciting ways to see Washington, D.C., is while serving as an intern in a congressional office. Students have the opportunity to enjoy our nation’s capital for a month or more while getting a behind the scenes pass to the United States Senate.

Each summer, Senator Stevens offers thirty students a position on his staff. These internships offer young Alaskans a variety of opportunities and responsibilities that assist the Senator and his staff. Interns generally help by researching legislative issues, monitoring committee hearings, answering telephones, performing clerical and press office duties, and delivering messages to the Senate floor and committee hearing rooms.

There are three types of internships available with different qualifications for each. All interns receive a stipend to cover housing and normal living expenses.

High school interns are graduating high school seniors. There are twenty high school intern positions available each summer divided into two sessions of ten students each. Each session is four weeks long. The first session spans the month of June and the second session begins the first full week following the July 4 recess. All high school interns are required to stay in housing arranged by Senator Stevens’ office – generally on the campus of the George Washington University in downtown Washington, D.C. The high school internship program allows students ample time to assist in the office and also visit national monuments, memorials, landmarks, historical locations, and cultural and sporting events.

High school coordinators help Senator Stevens’ personal office staff coordinate the high school intern program. Eligible students must be 21 years old, willing to drive in Washington, D.C., and agree to live in the dormitory at George Washington University. Coordinators must commit to stay for the entire summer while high school interns are in the office. While the responsibilities are greater, the intern stipend is adjusted accordingly and coordinators will enjoy the same experiences outside of the office that high school students do. Each summer, one male and one female high school coordinator is required.

College interns are generally rising juniors or seniors or students who have graduated in the current year. Eight positions are available for college students. Senator Stevens’ requires a minimum commitment of six weeks though students may opt to serve longer. College interns are free to make their own housing arrangements or can contact Senator Stevens’ staff to be placed in a dorm room at George Washington University. College interns get a full experience by being rotated through several parts of the office and Senator Stevens’ committees.
