About the Information Services Division

The Information Services Division (formerly the Office of Information Services) is responsible for creating, maintaining, and disseminating a NIST knowledge base which supports the research and administrative needs required to fulfill the scientific, engineering, and technical mission of NIST in support of the United States industrial and economic communities. The Information Services Division operates under Technology Services within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (See the organization chart).

The Information Services Division (ISD) provides professional scientific and technical research assistance to NIST staff through the activities of three primary programs:

The Research Library Information Group

The Electronic Information and Publications Group

The NIST Museum and History Program

These programs create, maintain, and disseminate a wide range of products and services geared toward NIST’s research, its publications, and its history.

The Research Library Information Group (RLIG)

The Research Library and Information Group aids NIST researchers through its management of the NIST Research Library. Along with the selection, acquisition, cataloging, and classification of resources for the Library itself, the program provides NIST staff with general, scientific, and technical reference services; literature searching; document delivery, interlibrary loan, and much more.

- The NIST Research Library:

The NIST Research Library has a science, engineering and technology research collection of over 300,000 volumes and current subscriptions  to over 1,000 scholarly journals, electronic journals, and databases. Want to know more about the NIST Research Library? Call x3052 or e-mail a Librarian.

- Reference/Consulting Services: Need help with a research project or finding an obscure reference?  Professional librarians are on staff to assist you with your research and information needs.  Contact a Reference Librarian at x3052 or e-mail library@nist.gov. They are experts in finding information and publications on a particular topic, and in answering technical and general information questions.  Research Consultant Services are also available for long term projects.

- Circulation Services: Charge out, renew, or hold NIST Research Library materials 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Make requests:

- Library User Education and Tours: RLIG provides opportunities to learn first-hand about the Library through:

  • no-cost training each month on the NIST Virtual Library
  • tours of the NIST Research Library (by request)

Contact the Information Desk (library@nist.gov or x3052). The dates and times of scheduled training are listed in the NIST Administrative Calendar.

- Document Delivery: Library staff will supply photocopied and scanned articles from journals held in the NIST Research Library. Requests are submitted via the ILLiad system.

Read Frequently Asked Questions about the Library's ILLiad system. Sorry, material is for NIST staff only

For more information, call 301-975-2811, or see the Library's Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Policy. Sorry, material is for NIST staff only

***Other libraries and non-NIST employees should consult the Library's Lending and Copying Policy.

- Interlibrary Loan (ILL): If the Library’s physical collection doesn’t have the resource you need, try the Interlibrary Loan service. The ILL staff searches networks of government, scientific, and technological libraries to obtain loans or copies of customers' requested publications. There is usually no charge for Interlibrary Loan services, and requests are generally fulfilled within 5-10 business days.  Rush service is available.

For more information, see the Library's Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Policy Sorry, material is for NIST staff only or contact the Library’s ILL staff at 301-975-3981.  Requests are submitted via the ILLiad system.  Read Frequently Asked Questions about the Library's ILLiad system. Sorry, material is for NIST staff only

***Other libraries and non-NIST employees should consult the Library's Lending and Copying Policy.

- Book Ordering Services: You may recommend that the NIST Research Library purchase a new journal or book for the collection. Requests can be handled in person by filling out a form, by phone (x3052), by using this online form, or through the REQUEST option in the online catalog.  The Library staff will evaluate the request and purchase the item (if relevant to NIST research and funds are available), process it, and notify you when it is available.

- Cataloging Services: Library staff process all new materials received in the NIST Research Library and inputs the bibliographic information into the online catalog.  In addition, several offices within NIST have their specialized collections listed in the online catalog.

ISD Cafe: The NIST Research Library is the home of the ISD's Hot-Spot Cafe, a service jointly offered by the Information Services Division and the NIST Cafeteria. The ISD Cafe is located on the main floor of the Library in the Reading Room area near the wall of windows.  Coffee and tea are available. The honor system is expected when making purchases.

The Electronic Information and Publications Group (EIPG)

The Electronic Information and Publications Group (EIPG) provides a host of high-quality products and services to support NIST’s computerized information systems and its Publications Program. EIPG partners with divisions and programs across NIST, supporting Internet-based business processes and publications in both electronic and traditional formats.

- Washington Editorial Review Board (WERB): This board, made up of authors and editors from all Operating Units, is the review authority for NIST technical information. EIPG supports this authority through several activities including:

  • Facilitating weekly WERB meetings
  • Managing the review process for all manuscripts
  • Tracking all publication data thorugh the Editorial Review System (ERS)

EIPG also addresses all agency questions regarding publications policies. For more information on WERB or NIST’s publications, contact Laurie Davis-Covin at x8027 or laurie.davis-covin@nist.gov.

- Electronic Products and Online Publishing: EIPG helps customers determine the most effective means of publishing online. The program’s electronic information experts employ the latest Web-based technologies to improve a publication’s:

  • Availability to new audiences
  • Section 508 accessibility
  • Customer usability
  • Uniformity with other online and traditional NIST formats

To find out how EIPG’s electronic information experts can help you, contact Barbara Silcox at x2146 or  barbara.silcox@nist.gov.

  • Guidelines for expressing uncertainty
  • Use of the International System of Units (SI)
  • Document organization
  • Adherence to NIST Style and publications policy

EIPG also maintains the NIST Technical Publishing Guide, which answers many questions NIST authors ask about getting their research written, edited and published. Contact Laurie Davis-Covin at x8027 or laurie.davis-covin@nist.gov for more information on this service.

- Printing Services: Numerous laws and regulations govern the printing process of Federal agencies. The ISD printing staff understand these myriad of restrictions and can guide you through the process of printing your NIST publications. EIPG also manages dissemination of NIST publications, ensuring that the appropriate government clearinghouses and depository libraries receive copies. For an in-depth view at EIPG’s printing services click here, call x2780, or e-mail ilse.putman@nist.gov
