Being well trained is not only critical to your vessel's mission but also to your safety. On this page you will find monthly updated resources for information concerning USCG approved courses, oversight of these courses, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) question pool, and Quality Standard Systems (QSS).
Approved Courses
There are currently over 1,750 Coast Guard approved courses offered by
over 245 training providers. To view a complete listing of these courses
select the "Approved
Courses" link below. Otherwise, the course listings are grouped by course
subject areas to make searching for courses easier.
Specific approvals awarded for each course can be found in the “Approval”
column within the listings. Mariners who are interested in attending a course
should review the course approval to determine if it will meet their needs.
- Vessel Security Officer Courses
- Approved Courses - The complete listing of all Coast Guard approved courses.
- Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Courses
- STCW Courses – The complete listing of all courses that have been approved to satisfy requirements of STCW.
- Able Seaman Courses – These courses will satisfy USCG Able Seaman examination requirements, but will NOT meet any requirements of STCW.
- ARPA Courses
- Bridge Resource Management Courses
- Basic Safety Training Courses – Courses approved to meet all or part of the STCW Basic Safety Training Requirements.
- Celestial Navigation Courses – Courses to substitute for a Coast Guard Celestial Navigation exam OR to meet STCW requirements. STCW-approved courses are also listed under Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch Courses.

- Lifeboatman Courses – These courses will meet the USCG written and/or practical examination requirements for a Lifeboatman, endorsement, but will NOT meet the STCW requirements for Proficiency in Survival Craft.
- Master/Chief Mate Courses – Individual courses approved to meet specific STCW training requirements for Masters and Chief Mates.
- Medical Courses – Medical courses required by STCW, including Medical Care Provider, and Medical Care Person-In-Charge courses.
- MODU Courses – These courses will meet the stability training requirements for MODU licenses, or will meet the USCG written examination requirements for MODU licenses.
- Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch Programs – Complete training programs leading to STCW certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch.
- Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch Courses – Individual courses approved to meet specific STCW training requirements for Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch.
- Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch Programs – Complete training programs leading to STCW certification as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch.
- Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch Courses – Individual courses approved to meet specific STCW training requirements for Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch.
- Offshore Supply Vessels (OSV) Programs – Programs approved to meet STCW requirements for ratings and/or Officers serving on OSVs.
- OUPV/Master 100 Tons/Master 200 Tons Courses – These courses will meet the USCG written examination requirements for deck licenses up to Master 200 Tons.

- Personal Survival Techniques Courses
- Proficiency in Survival Craft Courses
- QMED Courses – These courses will meet the USCG written examination requirements for QMED endorsements, or substitute for a portion of the sea service required for QMED endorsements.
- Radar Observer Courses – The complete list of all courses approved for original issue or renewal of Radar Observer endorsements. STCW-approved Radar Observer courses are also listed under Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch Courses.

Course Oversight Guidance
The purpose of this Instruction is to formally promulgate existing policy and more clearly delineate the standards and reporting requirements for conducting oversight of Coast Guard approved courses and non-governmental parties that perform services related to the issuance of merchant marine licenses, certificates of registry, and merchant mariner's documents.
GMDSS Question Pool
The U.S. GMDSS Implementation Task Force has developed a question pool for use in both Coast Guard approved GMDSS training and on the Federal Communications Commission GMDSS Operator examinations.
Schools with Coast Guard approved courses are encouraged to request approval to replace the question pool they are currently using in their courses with the new question pool. A copy of the Task Force's recommendations, with instructions for use of the new question pool, is available here.
