The Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) seeks to reduce energy use and improve overall efficiency in the U.S. chemicals industry. ITP partners with industry to effectively plan and implement a comprehensive R&D agenda that will help ensure the industry's vitality well into the future.

Chemicals are the building blocks of many products that meet our most fundamental needs for food, shelter, and health. Chemical products are vital to computing, telecommunications, biotechnology, and other advanced technologies. The U.S. chemical industry is the world's largest, accounting for over 26% of global chemical production (over $450 billion per year) and almost 30% of all U.S. industrial energy consumption.

Goal and Strategy: The goal of ITP Chemicals is to help the chemical industry achieve a 30% reduction in energy, water use, and toxic and pollutant dispersion per unit of output by 2020. To achieve this goal, ITP Chemicals supports a diverse portfolio of cost-shared, pre-competitive R&D projects that meet industry needs and help achieve national goals for energy and the environment. The subprogram sponsors high-impact R&D that is too risky for industry to fund alone, and encourages the development of collaborative partnerships.

ITP Chemicals has worked in partnership with industry to facilitate the development of industry's consensus on a Vision for the future and on industry's crucial R&D priorities in Roadmaps. In addition, the subprogram has worked to achieve the following:

  • Analyze energy use in the chemical industry and identify the R&D priorities that provide the greatest public benefits in terms of energy savings
  • Issue competitive Solicitations for collaborative R&D
  • Establish an R&D Portfolio of innovative projects to address high-priority, pre-competitive needs of chemical companies.
