Target Training Populations
The University of Alabama at Birmingham will target members of the Communications
Workers of America (CWA), members and employees of Native American tribes, and public safety
personnel involved with hazardous materials response and hazardous waste.
Program Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) provides training under the Hazardous
Waste Worker Training (HWWT) Program. UAB provides courses to three populations of workers who
share the need for general and specialized training in topics related to
CFR 1910.120, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.120, Hazardous Waste
Operations and Emergency Response(http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_ document?p_table=STANDARDS&p_id=9765) . The overall goal is to improve the health and safety of members of the
Communications Workers of America (CWA), Native Americans, and public safety personnel,
by helping them reduce exposures to hazardous chemicals in their workplaces and communities.
Classes include Hazardous Materials Awareness Train-the-Trainer, First Responder Awareness
Level, First Responder Operations Level, Incident Management Systems, Clandestine Drug Lab
Awareness, WMD Awareness, Radiological/Nuclear Awareness, Fit Testing Train-the-Trainer; Air
Monitoring for Emergency Responders; Confined Space Rescue; and Training Techniques for Adult
Learners. Classes are taught in train-the-trainer mode, with materials and support provided
for peer trainers through a web-based Trainer Support Network.
