Over the next two decades, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) will modernize its aging fleet of ships, aircraft, helicopters and their sensors, and communications and logistics infrastructure in a seventeen billion dollar acquisition program, known as the Integrated Deepwater System Program or "Deepwater."
In conjunction with the Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) contractor, Integrated Coast Guard Systems (ICGS), an equal partnership between Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, the program’s goal is to recapitalize the USGC's aging fleet of ships and aircraft and provide them with state-of-the-art Command, Control, Communications and Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems that are supported by an integrated logistics regime.
In March 2001, BIS entered into a five-year agreement with the USCG to support the Deepwater program. BIS promotes international cooperation and exports of Deepwater assets, with the goal of enhancing the U.S. defense manufacturing and employment base. The USCG chairs Team Deepwater International, comprised of SIES and Integrated Coast Guard Systems, to facilitate international outreach activities. BIS's support activities include:
The Deepwater assets will be interoperable with the U.S. Navy and NATO forces. As the lead federal agency for maritime homeland security and a member of the Department of Homeland Security, the Deepwater Program will provide the necessary capabilities for the USCG to serve the nation's needs in maritime homeland security, maritime domain awareness and continue to provide operational excellence in the USCG's traditional missions.
Deepwater assets are used for a variety of USCG missions including:
• Environmental and fisheries protection
• Drug and alien migration interdiction
• Aids to navigation
• Anti-piracy
• Search and rescue
• Monitoring of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ)
• Counter-terrorism, and
• Homeland security.
