Public Schedule for the Week of April 28 - May 3, 2008

April 28, The Governor will meet with Korea Consul General Dae-Hyun Kang, as he prepares to depart his post on April 30.

April 28, Governor Lingle will join Farrington High School Principal Catherine Payne, staff, students, parents and community partners as the school presents its strategic plan for the future to the public.  Principal Payne, with input from administrators, key staff and former faculty, developed a school restructuring plan to improve student achievement through standards-based education.

April 30, Governor Lingle will proclaim the month of May as “Mental Health Awareness Month” and discuss the progress being made by the Mental Health Transformation Working Group to develop a collaborative and comprehensive mental health plan to transform Hawai‘i’s mental health system. 

April 30, The Governor will deliver the keynote address to participants of three separate conferences that focus on tobacco control, diabetes and cancer in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations.  The conference is coordinated by Papa Ola Lokahi, an organization dedicated to improving the health status and well-being of Native Hawaiians, and the American Legacy Foundation, an independent national foundation dedicated to helping young people reject tobacco and providing access to tobacco prevention and cessation services.  The conference will include participants from Hawai‘i, the U.S. mainland, Guam, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Palau, the Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia. 
 
May 1, Governor Lingle will deliver remarks at a joint conference of the Hawai‘i Association of Mortgage Brokers and the Mortgage Bankers Association of Hawai‘i.

May 1, Governor Lingle will join Lieutenant General Benjamin R. Mixon, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Pacific, at the annual Junior ROTC Military Review and Awards Ceremony.  The Governor will deliver remarks, review the troops, and recognize outstanding cadets.  JROTC cadets from 26 public and private high schools across the state will participate in this event.  Media planning to attend should contact: Marjorie Barrell, USARPAC Public Affairs Office, at 438-9761.

May 2, Governor Lingle will deliver remarks at the Hawai‘i Government Employees Association Joint Labor-Management Training Seminar.  The seminar is intended to educate participants in leadership skills and improving labor relations.

May 2, The Governor will participate in a celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of Tripler Army Medical Center.

May 3, Governor Lingle will deliver remarks at the 30th annual State Math Bowl Championship.  The competition promotes the teaching and learning of mathematics and gives math students the opportunity to compete with one another in solving challenging problems.  Engaging students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a key component of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s Hawai‘i Innovation Initiative because it fosters the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills that will better prepare students to enter the work force.
