Overview

Studies of the Earth's geology and its environment have yielded invaluable information about how Earth formed and how contaminants are distributed via chemical, physical, and environmental processes. Through NSLS-II, geologists and environmental scientists will gain the tools they need to continue to study our planet and learn how to protect it.

At right: A series of micro x-ray fluoresence images of lead (Pb) distribution in tobacco roots and stems, with and without EDTA (a complex organic molecule that increases plants' ability to absorb metals) added to a contaminated soil. This reserach on how to remediate contaminated areas will greatly benefit from NSLS-II.
