Highlights in Minority Health
January / February, 2005

TIME TO APPLY FOR A 2005 INTERNSHIP!
Many applications are due soon, so fill yours out today!
The programs below are designed to encourage under-represented minorities to consider pursuing careers in the public health sciences and the Federal government.  We encourage all such students to consider applying to programs for which they are eligible.
Graduate & Undergraduate Students
	DART Intern Program  Application due Feb. 4, 2005 The DART internship program is offered in collaboration with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), to increase the knowledge and skills of minority students in Biomedical/Engineering Sciences. Special emphasis is placed on laboratory biomedical and engineering research to assess and prevent occupational disease and injury.
	Summer Research Internship Program: Project IMHOTEP  Application due Feb. 4, 2005 Project: IMHOTEP is an 11-week summer internship program designed to increase the knowledge and skills of undergraduate students in biostatistics, epidemiology, occupational safety and health, or the health sciences. It provides participants with intensive research and data analysis experience with experts at CDC and other agencies and academic institutions such as the Council of State and with Territorial Epidemiology, and Carnegie Mellon University.
	Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools, Inc. (HSHPS) Summer Internship Program  Application due Feb. 15, 2005 This eight-week internship program will provide the opportunity for medical students to work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and to gain knowledge about the Federal government careers and skills related to prevention research, surveillance, public health policy and program development.
	Dr. James A Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship  Application due Feb. 28, 2005 This eight-week summer program is designed to expose minority and disadvantaged medical, veterinary, pharmacy, and other allied health, public health, and graduate students to various research and prevention opportunities.  For more information.
	The Public Health Summer Fellows (PHSF) Program  Application due Feb. 28, 2005 The PHSF is an eight-week summer program designed to provide practical experience in public health to minority undergraduate juniors, seniors, and recent graduates. This experience will introduce students to public health skills and practices that stimulate interest in public health and increase the representation in the public health workforce of minority professionals.  For more information.
Middle & High School Students
	The Starlab Project  Applications will be released late April/early May, 2005 The Starlab Project is a six-week program designed to encourage under-represented minorities to consider pursuing careers in the public health sciences. During the program, middle and high school students are exposed to laboratory demonstrations as well as hands-on laboratory experiments on selected topics in chemistry, biology, medical technology, and engineering. In addition, students are able to interact with minority scientists from local colleges, agencies, and laboratories.
All Students
	Regional Research Center for Minority Health (RRCMH) Research Assistant Trainee Program This program recruits high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to participate in public health research and provides a forum for educational and career development, and opportunities for networking with accomplished researchers in minority health.
