ABOUT THE COMMERCIAL SERVICE BUCHAREST

For over 20 years, the U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce has successfully brought together exporters and importers of U.S. goods and services from around the world. Our teams of more than 1,800 trade professionals in 105 U.S. cities and 151 U.S. Embassies, Consulates and Trade Centers all over the globe are trained to help companies navigate the complex international trade process.

CS Bucharest’s objective is to expand US exports to Romania by developing local contact bases, researching local market trends and developing opportunities for US companies accomplish this. The Commercial Service provides US companies with services (fee-based) to locate interested buyers, distributors and agents, and advocates on behalf of US companies when they face trade barriers that impede them from conducting business.

THE CS BUCHAREST INTERNSHIP

The Commercial Service of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, known as CS Bucharest, would like you to consider joining our team as a volunteer intern. You would be working alongside the Commercial Service staff helping U.S. exporters research the Romanian market, find trade partners, and develop international business solutions. CS Bucharest is a busy, demand-driven office with plenty of opportunities for you to learn and to build experience into your resume.

Student interns will be responsible for populating our database, developing and inputting local content into the CS Bucharest web site, responding to staff or phone inquiries, providing research and editing support in preparing market research reports, translating documents, and assisting in the preparation of trade events.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Romanian or US citizenship
  • English proficiency
  • Knowledge of MS Office and the Internet (especially web-based reseach)
  • Writing, research, editing, and communication skills

The Commercial Service of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest provides students who are exploring a career in international business, marketing, diplomacy, or foreign affairs the opportunity to work in the area of international trade together with our team. This is strictly a volunteer internship; interns will receive no monetary reimbursement for their work at CS Bucharest. Work schedules will be negotiated. Business dress is required.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application process is made up of a number of steps: filling out an application form, participating in an interview and English language test, submitting a resume, cover letter and a letter of recommendation, filling out a security questionnaire, and finally taking part in a security interview. A background security check will be conducted, and only upon receiving the mandatory security clearance (usually about 2 weeks after the security interview), can an applicant start the internship at CS Bucarest.

Students majoring in international business, marketing, diplomacy and foreign affairs will be given preference.

THE COMMERCIAL SERVICE BUCHAREST, ROMANIA: LAUNCH OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2006

The CS Bucharest Internship program kicked off with our first intern, Oana Lupu, a sophomore at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., who worked with the CS Romania Team between June 5 and July 4, 2006. The second intern, Octavia Foarta, a sophomore at Amherst was with the CS Team from July 5 to August 15, 2006. Miron Lila from the London School of Economics & Political Science and Florian Langa from Romania's National School of Political & Administrative Sciences were up next (at the same time!), followed by Ileana Nicorici from Bucharest's Economic Studies Academy. In 2007 five new students joined CS Bucharest Internship Program: Monica Filip, Student, Internal & International Commercial and Financial-Banking Relations, Romanian-American University, Steven Foss, Student, Bachelor of Arts, Justice Studies, Kent State University, Elizabeth Rivard, Student, Master of Arts, Development Economics, Faculty of Economic Sciences, Warsaw University, Warsaw, Poland, Dan Dascalescu and Mihaela Paun, Students of the Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest, Romania. This year new Romanian students Alexandru Bernea and Bogdan Dumitru joined our program from the Bucharest Economic Studies Academy and we had aboard a new American student, Thomas Sewell from the University of Kentucky, Patterson School's Master of Arts in Diplomacy and International Commerce.
